Locate schools in your area distributing art kits to follow along with book club activities.

Children learn so much from what they see parents and family members do.  As you read each story with your child, show your own excitement about reading. Depending on your child’s age, foster strong reading skills by engaging with the text in the following ways:

• Pointing to the words as you read (PK)
• Taking turns reading or “retelling” favorite stories (PK-2)
• Inviting your child to point to or track words as you read (K-2)
• Helping your child sound out words they don’t know (K-2)
• Talking about what you are reading! (PK-2)

The biggest part of developing your child's writing skills is to first build their confidence as writers. You can do this through some of the following activities:

• Encourage your child to write, even if she’s scribbling (PK)
• Encourage your child to draw and to talk about her drawings (PK-K)
• Ask your child to tell you stories as you write them down (PK-K)
• Encourage your child to notice the different ways you use writing. Have your child help you with writing to-do lists, notes or texts to family members, creating shopping lists, writing cards or letters, etc. (PK-2)
• As your child gets older, encourage your child to write stories, make posters, or create poems and read them out loud
